Data Storage Converter

Convert between 11 data-size units — bit, byte, KB/MB/GB/TB/PB (decimal, 1000-based) and KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB (binary, 1024-based). Explains why your "1 TB" hard drive shows 0.909 TB in the OS.

Decimal (KB/MB/GB) uses 1000-based; binary (KiB/MiB/GiB) uses 1024-based. A "1 TB" hard drive (decimal) holds 0.909 TiB (binary) — why your OS shows less storage than the box claims.

What powers the Data Storage Converter

11 units: bit, byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB

Decimal (1000) and binary (1024) both supported

Bit ↔ byte conversion (8 bits = 1 byte)

Petabyte for cloud / data center scale

Tebibyte for accurate OS reporting

Built differently

Why the Data Storage Converter is different

Browser-native

The Data Storage Converter runs entirely in your browser. Input is processed locally — never uploaded, never logged, never cached anywhere outside your device.

No artificial limits

No daily quotas, no character ceilings, no "upgrade for more" walls. Every feature is the complete feature — the same on the first use as the thousandth.

Production-grade quality

Built to the same engineering bar as paid SaaS tools — accurate algorithms, audited logic, responsive design and accessibility-tested interactions.

Use Contexts

Common use contexts

  • Reconciling "1 TB" hard drive vs OS storage display
  • Bandwidth calculations (Mbps vs MBps)
  • Cloud storage pricing comparisons
  • Backup and archive sizing
Privacy by design

Private and secure

Zero upload

All processing happens in your browser. Input is never transmitted, logged or cached.

Works offline

Once the page loads, the tool runs without an internet connection. No network calls happen during use.

No tracking

No accounts, no cookies for tool state. Only aggregate analytics count visits at the page level.

FAQ

Data Storage Converter questions

Drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 10^12 bytes). Operating systems usually report binary (1 TiB = 2^40 bytes). 1 TB (decimal) = 0.909 TiB (binary). The OS shows 931 GiB but labels it "GB" — confusing, but not a missing space.
